AboutThe Sailing Club at Virginia Tech, or “Tech Sailing” was founded in 2003 by a group of students interested in promoting the sport. The club purchased a small fleet of FJs from Dartmouth and still sails those boats today. We have also acquired several new boats since then, including two 420s and V15s, and are looking to purchase more in the near future. For several years the club sailed out of a Boy Scout Camp on Claytor Lake. Thanks to a collaboration between the club, Claytor Lake State Park, and Claytor Lake Sailing Association (CLSA), a new site, known as the Green Boating Center, was created on state park land in 2011. This site is closer to campus and provides better sailing opportunities for the club and CLSA.
Since 2003, the club has continued to grow in both the number of people involved and the quality of experience offered. Our organization is student-run with the help of our faculty advisor, Dr. Randolph Wynne. The club is always working to promote the sport of sailing by welcoming members from all sailing backgrounds, including those who have never sailed, and by competing at the intercollegiate level as part of the MAISA conference. We are now #15 in that conference. We also participate in other activities like socials with other clubs, barbecues, hikes, Sunday brunches, game nights and movie nights. FAQ's |
